MLK Day of Service – Part 1 PACKING CARE BAGS for the HOMELESS

Volunteer FOR the kids, or WITH the kids–several opportunities available! Send an email to Meredith@paxtontrust.org to receive updates about opportunities! Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a “day on, not a day off.” MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” We are looking for professionals willing to donate their time to further the education of teens, or anyone wanting to help the homeless. The Paxton Trust is partnering with Embark Center for Self-Directed Education and One Sparrow DC to move one step closer to that BELOVED COMMUNITY! Send an email to Meredith@paxtontrust.org to receive updates about opportunities!

We are pulling together a day of service event for Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year. Since it will be so cold this winter, we want to make stay warm packages to hand out to the homeless in DC.

One Sparrow will be providing hats, warming blankets, and bags for the supplies to go into and we are reaching out to people to donate the following items:

– chapstick
– toilet paper
– feminine items
– wet wipes
– protein bars/granola bars
– cracker packs
– tissues
– first aid kits

We are going to make 100 bags. We are going to meet Saturday, January 19th from 9a-11a to pack the bags and then on Monday, January 21st from 10-12 to hand them out.

Let me know if you are interested in helping out. The following link is for signing up to attend the event and for saying what you are planning to donate. Please share this and spread the word!
